Centers
TTI is home to several national centers, some of which TTI is leading and others in which TTI is a primary partner.

Lead
Center for Healthy and Efficient Mobility
Established in 2016, the Center for Healthy and Efficient Mobility (CHEM) is a Tier 1 University Transportation Center led by TTI. CHEM focuses on the intersection of transportation and public health and includes six partner universities.

National Center for Infrastructure Transformation
The National Center for Infrastructure Transformation, led by Prairie View A&M University, is a national-tier University Transportation Center focused on improving the durability and extending the life of transportation infrastructure through research, education and technology transfer.

Maritime Transportation Research and Education Center
Previously funded and renewed in 2016, the Maritime Transportation Research and Education Center (MarTREC) is a U.S. Department of Transportation Tier 1 University Transportation Center based at the University of Arkansas. The center conducts multidisciplinary research, education, and technology transfer focused on preserving the nation’s maritime and multimodal transportation systems.

National Institute for Congestion Reduction
Established in 2019, the National Institute for Congestion Reduction is a U.S. Department of Transportation University Transportation Center based at the University of South Florida. The center aims to optimize the transportation system through real-world deployment of multimodal congestion reduction strategies that leverage technology, big data and innovative approaches.

Center for Railway Research
Established in 2011 and led by TTI, the Center for Railway Research includes a laboratory sponsored by the Association of American Railroads and focuses on engineering challenges facing the railroad industry.

Southern Plains Transportation Center
The Southern Plains Transportation Center, based at the University of Oklahoma, is a consortium of 11 universities in U.S. Department of Transportation Region 6. The center focuses on developing solutions to climate-related transportation challenges across the region.

Southern Regional Climate Center
The Southern Regional Climate Center moved to The Texas A&M University System in 2021 and is housed in Texas A&M’s College of Geosciences. TTI is a supporting entity in the center tasked with conducting research into the impacts of extreme weather on transportation.

Center for Transportation Computational Mechanics
The Center for Transportation Computational Mechanics is housed at TTI and was designated by the Federal Highway Administration in 1998 to develop and use computer simulation in testing and analyses.

University Transportation Center for Railway Safety
Established in 2013, the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) is a Tier 1 center headquartered at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. UTCRS focuses on improving railway safety, with additional goals of enhancing economic strength, global competitiveness and sustainability. The center conducts research, testing, deployment and technology transfer of smart rail technologies in collaboration with industry partners.

Center for Alcohol and Drug Education Studies
The Center for Alcohol and Drug Education Studies was initially created at Texas A&M University and moved to TTI in 2012. The center is housed under the Center for Transportation Safety.

Center for Infrastructure Renewal
The Center for Infrastructure Renewal is the joint center of TTI and the Texas Engineering Experiment Station. Funded by the Texas Legislature in 2015, the center develops transformative infrastructure solutions and trains the infrastructure workforce.

Established at TTI by the Texas Legislature in 2006, the Center for Intelligent Transportation Research helps enhance the efficient, safe and secure movement of people and goods across U.S. borders.

The Center for Ports and Waterways was established at TTI by the Texas Legislature in 1995 to produce benefits-oriented research for the water transportation industry.
